Laguna Parón

The largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca fills a granite-walled valley beneath the perfect pyramid of Artesonraju. A road reaches the shore, and a short climb to the viewpoint delivers one of the great mountain panoramas of Peru.

Parón lies above Caraz at about 4,185 m, reached by a rough road that climbs through a narrow canyon of towering granite. The lake is a deep turquoise, more than three kilometres long, with Artesonraju, Pirámide de Garcilaso, Chacraraju and Huandoy standing around its head.

From the parking area a steep 30 to 45 minute path climbs to a rock viewpoint that frames the whole lake with Artesonraju behind, the view often compared to the Paramount Pictures logo. Those who want more can walk the lakeshore trail toward the far end. The tour is longer by road than Llanganuco but involves little walking.

Highlights

  • Largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca
  • Artesonraju, the 'Paramount mountain', at the head of the lake
  • Short climb to a spectacular viewpoint
  • Dramatic canyon drive from Caraz
