Ishinca

Ishinca is the friendly glacier peak that gives the valley its name: a broad snow dome reached by a moraine ridge, a glacial lake and an uncomplicated crevassed glacier. It is the standard place to learn rope-team travel before stepping up to Tocllaraju.

Set at the eastern end of the Quebrada Ishinca, the mountain offers a classic introduction to Andean glacier climbing. From base camp a trail climbs past the turquoise Laguna Ishinca to a moraine camp, and from there the normal route crosses the glacier on moderate slopes to a short steeper step just below the summit.

Crevasses are present and the route changes from year to year, so the climb is always done roped as a team; this is exactly what makes it such a good training ground. The summit slopes rarely exceed 35 to 40 degrees, which allows most fit newcomers to reach the top in five to seven hours from moraine camp.

From the summit the view opens across the Ranrapalca massif and the entire Ishinca cirque. Combined with Urus Este in the same trip, it provides a progressive acclimatisation schedule that many guides consider the best five-day programme in the range.

Highlights

  • Classic learning glacier with real crevasse navigation
  • Beautiful approach past Laguna Ishinca
  • Combines easily with Urus Este and Tocllaraju
  • Summit views of Ranrapalca, Palcaraju and Tocllaraju

Day by day

Itineraries are a guide, not a contract: weather, acclimatisation and group pace can change the plan. Your guide makes the call on the mountain.

  1. Day 1

Huaraz – Pashpa – Ishinca base camp (approx. 4,350 m)

Drive to Pashpa and walk 4 to 5 hours up the Quebrada Ishinca to base camp.

  2. Day 2

Acclimatisation / Urus Este (optional) or skills day

Either climb Urus Este as acclimatisation or spend the day on glacier skills near camp.

  3. Day 3

Base camp – moraine camp (approx. 5,000 m) – or direct summit

Walk 2 to 3 hours past Laguna Ishinca to moraine camp. Strong teams sometimes summit directly from base camp on a long day instead.

  4. Day 4

    Summit (5,530 m) – base camp – Huaraz

Alpine start, climb the glacier and final slopes to the summit (4 to 6 hours), descend to base camp and continue down to Pashpa for the drive to Huaraz (long day) or spend a final night at base camp.
